History of LK's
In 1989, Lourens Kriel father of MD, Johan Kriel came home with a braai tong and decided there and then that he can produce one at half the price. Lourens and Johan jumped to work the next day, where they manufactured the tooling first and then their own tong and tested it the same evening. Not long after that Johan convinced Lourens to produce more tongs which they started selling. They used the money that they made from the sell to buy more aluminium.
Every Saturday from there-on were spent in the garage producing more tongs. The neighbourhood kids also contributed to the success story by helping the family in the production line. Later, the garage got too small and they had to move the store room to a Wendy house. The famous tong was improved by adding colour to the handle. They experimented with red, yellow and blue, but decided on red as this colour was unique to the business. The company moved to the factory in Blackheath in 2006
